After surviving a shipwreck, San Diego tuna fisherman Mike Mascarenhas, an immigrant from Portugal, loses a hand to a shark. The following season, one of his crew, Manuel Silva, falls overboard and is killed by the sharks following the boat.
Made the same year as the masterful Scarface (1932), Howard Hawks’s first major film, Tiger Shark is an odd but fascinating piece that alternates between melodrama and documentary realism in its reworking of a standard plot involving a one-handed San Diego tuna fisherman whose wife falls for the man he lost his hand saving.
