Roger Ebert praises the acting and the scenes of "On Golden Pond", a film adaptation of a stage play about an old couple and their family. He says the movie is a treasure for its simple affection, human growth and change, and the stardom of Hepburn and Fonda.
On the beautiful Golden Pond (really Squam Lake in Holderness, New Hampshire), elderly couple Ethel and Norman return to their summer cottage, where Ethel is immediately thrilled to hear the loons welcoming them back, although Norman claims he can hear nothing.
On Golden Pond. In his final role, Henry Fonda plays Norman Thayer, a prickly retired professor who visits his Maine summer home with his loving wife Ethel (Hepburn). Soon, they are joined by their daughter Chelsea (Jane Fonda), her fiancé Bill, and his son Billy.
