  4. "The Detective" contains a fine performance by Frank Sinatra, some very good scenes of police work, and not much else. It is a potentially excellent movie struggling to free itself from a heavy-handed script by Abby Mann and mediocre direction by Gordon Douglas.

  7. The Detective is perhaps most notable for being one of the first films to concentrate on a police detective while covering the taboo subject of homosexuality. Although the final product is offensive in places, it’s decent.
