The Penitent Thief, also known as the Good Thief, Wise Thief, Grateful Thief, or Thief on the Cross, is one of two unnamed thieves in Luke's account of the crucifixion of Jesus in the New Testament. The Gospel of Luke describes him asking Jesus to "remember him" when Jesus comes into his kingdom.
New International Version. 39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”. 40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve.
The good thief admits his sin, accepts his suffering, and thus, opens his heart to the transformative power of Christ. He doesn't ask Jesus to take him down from the cross. He knows that the life he lived on earth deserves death.
