Polycarp was an old man, at least 86 (see part 10), and probably the last surviving person to have known an apostle, having been a disciple of St. John.

Aug 5, 2022 · Polycarp was a disciple of St. John. He was maybe one of the last disciples of John before the aged apostle left the land of the living. He sat under John and learned many things from his teachings. Apostle John became his mentor, and Polycarp continued the work after John’s death.
Information on Polycarp. Polycarp resided in Asia Minor as bishop of Smyrna and sent an epistle to the Philippians c. 120-140 CE. Polycarp was martyred c. 155 CE. In Adv. Haer. V.33.4, Irenaeus describes Papias as "the hearer of John, and a companion of Polycarp." Irenaeus mentions Polycarp in Adv. Haer., III.3.4.
