Within Our Gates—the oldest surviving film by a Black director—is fascinating as a historical document. Oscar Micheaux’s sophomore feature was considered lost to time (along with his extinct 1919 debut, The Homesteader ), before a single print, retitled La Negra , was recovered in Spain in the 1970s and underwent restoration in 1993.
