Dressed in bejeweled gowns and sparkling capes, and even in nothing but lace and orchids, she proves to be both provocative and brilliant in her role of exotic dancer turned double agent in the thralls of World War II.
In 1917, in Paris, the famous dancer Mata Hari has a double life as a German spy, obtaining secrets from French and Russian officers in bed. The chief of the French Secret Service Dubois is unsuccessfully in her tail trying to find proofs to incriminate Mata Hari.
When Mata Hari falls in love with one of her intended targets, the dashing Lt. Rosanoff (Ramon Novarro), Dubois uses her former accomplice (Lionel Barrymore) to bring her down.
