The Eel (うなぎ, Unagi) is a 1997 film directed by Shohei Imamura and starring Kōji Yakusho, Misa Shimizu, Mitsuko Baisho, and Akira Emoto. The film is loosely based on the novel On Parole by celebrated author Akira Yoshimura, combined with elements from the director's 1966 film The Pornographers.

Eels (often typeset as eels or EELS) is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1991 by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett, known by the stage name E. Band members have changed over the years, both in the studio and on stage, making Everett the only official member for most of the band's work.
A former convict (Koji Yakusho) opens a barber shop and falls in love with a young woman (Misa Shimizu) after saving her from suicide. The film explores themes of guilt, redemption and human nature with a dark and realistic tone.

White-collar worker Yamashita finds out that his wife has a lover and kills her. After eight years in prison, he opens a barber shop and talks to no-one except for an eel he befriended in prison. One day he finds the unconscious body of Keiko, who attempted suicide and reminds him of his wife.
The Eel. by Tom Mes. Businessman Yamashita (Yakusho) receives an anonymous letter, telling him that a strange man visits his wife whenever he's out on his nightly fishing trips. After pondering for a long time, he sets out for the seaside one night with the intention of returning early and finding out the truth.
