Yvette is horrifed to discover that Vance is a gambler, and to prevent him from seeing her again, Rivage sends his vicious foreman, Etienne, to kill him. Although Etienne succeeds in knifing Vance in the back, the gambler escapes in a small boat out to the river, where he is rescued by Melly and Barbee.
