Saul fails in his attempts to kill David, who has married his daughter (and Jonathan's sister) Michal. He eventually drives David into a ten-year exile in the land of the Philistines. When Jonathan is slain in a battle with the Philistines, Saul kills himself in grief, and David is summoned by the Israelites to become their king.
