In the late 1920s, a six-year-old girl named Lin Yingzi (Shen Jie) lives on a hutong in the south of Beijing with her family - her father, her mother and her nurse. Her first friend is a mad woman Xiuzhen who is always standing at the hutong entrance waiting for her missing daughter Little Guizi.

Seen through the gaze of a curious 11-year-old girl, the film is director Wu Yigong’s homage to a China 60 years gone. Based on writer Lin Haiyin’s childhood as a young girl in 1920s Beijing, it looks into China’s irretrievable past now only accessible through fractured and melancholic memory.
Yingzi is a young, impressionable girl living on the southern side of Beijing in the late 1920s. Encountering people in the city, she tries to understand how people are really like inside through her own eyes.
It is the late 1920s when six-year-old Yingzi and her family move to Beijing. As Yingzi explores the busy streets and alleys, she befriends a widow who, driven mad by grief, stands vigil at the entrance of her hutong, waiting for her missing daughter to return.
