It is the second animated feature film based on the 1967–69 manga series Lupin III by Monkey Punch.

Lupin III: Cagliostro no Shiro was the winner of the 1979 Oofuji Noburou Award. The main character of this film claims to be the grandson of the infamous gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. Arsène Lupin is a fictional character created in 1905 by French writer Maurice Leblanc.
