Othello, der Mohr von Venedig ( frühneuenglisch The Tragœdy of Othello, The Moore of Venice) ist ein Schauspiel von William Shakespeare. Es handelt von dem dunkelhäutigen Feldherren Othello, der aus übertriebener und durch den Intriganten Iago beförderter Eifersucht seine geliebte Ehefrau Desdemona und daraufhin sich selbst tötet.
Othello is a Moorish military commander who was serving as a general of the Venetian army in defence of Cyprus against invasion by Ottoman Turks. He had recently married Desdemona, a beautiful and wealthy Venetian lady younger than himself, without the knowledge of and despite the later objection of her father.

In Venice, at the start of Othello, the soldier Iago announces his hatred for his commander, Othello, a Moor. Othello has promoted Cassio, not Iago, to be his lieutenant. Iago crudely informs Brabantio, Desdemona ’s father, that Othello and Desdemona have eloped.
