While ransacking Nan Baker's apartment, Jack Coley, a smalltime burglar, steals a briefcase belonging to Nan's boy friend, Alan Sheridan. The briefcase contains plans for a secret defense formula which Alan plans to sell to a foreign power, and his superiors warn Alan that if the papers are not recovered, he will have to face the consequences.
