A naive gambler (D'Onofrio) on an uncanny winning streak attracts the attention of a calculating casino owner (Lindo), a sexy showgirl (DeMornay) and a trio of low life hustlers (led by Whaley), who each have their own greedy plans for the walking jackpot.
Inventive screwball noir with western motifs and occasional moments of surrealism, The Winner remains an archetypical Alex Cox film, despite having been disowned by the director. Like Tex Avery colliding with Jim Thompson, tone is inconsistent but enigmatic.
The Winner is a tantalising, character-driven thriller. Alex Cox has pulled together a marvellous cast, despite a low budget. Vincent D'Onofrio's naive Phillip is played to perfection, Rebecca De Mornay (Louise) is as sexy and manipulative as one could hope for, and Michael Madsen (Wolf) is as cool and ruthless as ever.
