General Charles Pelot Summerall (March 4, 1867 – May 14, 1955) was a senior United States Army officer. He commanded the 1st Infantry Division in World War I, was Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1926 to 1930, and was President of The Citadel between 1931 and 1953.
Charles Pelot Summerall was born in Blounts Ferry, Florida, on 4 March 1867. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 1st Infantry before being sent to the 5th Artillery a year later. In 1899, he was made a first lieutenant and fought against the Philippine insurgents.
