Elizabeth Gibson Chifley (1 August 1886 – 9 September 1962) was the wife of Ben Chifley, the Prime Minister of Australia from 1945 to 1949. Chifley was born Elizabeth Gibson McKenzie in Bathurst, New South Wales, to George and Isabella McKenzie. She was the eldest of their two daughters, Lizzie and Annie.
Elizabeth McKenzie and Joseph Benedict (Ben) Chifley married on 6 June 1914, when they were in their late 20s. Both had been born in Bathurst, New South Wales, and they lived there all their lives. Their own home at 10 Busby Street was a small stone cottage given to Mrs Chifley by her parents.

Chifley regained his parliamentary seat in the 1940 election and earnt wide respect by capably handling Australia’s wartime economy as treasurer in Curtin’s government (1941-45). Following Curtin’s death in July 1945, Chifley became party leader and Prime Minister.
Chifley was a ‘true believer’ in the Labor Party and in the role that government could play in stabilising the economy and keeping unemployment low. He was an active treasurer, initially working well with Prime Minister Curtin and then serving as both Prime Minister and Treasurer himself.
