Pope Pius VI (Italian: Pio VI; born Count Giovanni Angelo Braschi, 25 December 1717 – 29 August 1799) was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 15 February 1775 to his death in August 1799.
Pius VI (born December 25, 1717, Cesena, Papal States—died August 29, 1799, Valence, France) was an Italian pope (1775–99) whose tragic pontificate was the longest of the 18th century. Braschi held various papal administrative positions before being ordained a priest in 1758.
