I am a Royal Astronomical Society Research Fellow at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). My research is focussed on nearby galaxy evolution studies; particularly the growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the processes responsible for the shut down of star formation in a galaxy.

Astrophysics. My research focusses on the co-evolution of galaxies and their supermassive black holes, in particular the process of quenching whereby galaxies stop forming stars. I wrote a review of the topic in the introduction of Smethurst et al. (2017) which looked at the environmental dependence of quenching.
Astrophysicist. From a young age I’ve always been interested in space. I wanted a telescope for my birthday when my friends all wanted bikes. So when it came to choosing my university degree, it was a no brainer for me.
Jan 14, 2022 · Dr Smethurst has made major advances in the field of galaxy formation and evolution: her key discovery was to overturn the long-established view that galaxy mergers are the main process in driving galaxy evolution along with the formation and evolution of supermassive black holes.
