Jill Cornell Tarter (born January 16, 1944) is an American astronomer best known for her work on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence ( SETI ). Tarter is the former director of the Center for SETI Research, holding the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI at the SETI Institute.

Tarter traces her own fascination with outer space and the possibility of alien life back to time she spent with her father walking on the beaches of Florida and looking at the stars.
Dr. Jill Tarter is Chair Emeritus for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for that institution.

Astronomer Jill Tarter is director of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute's Center for SETI Research, and also holder of the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI. She led Project Phoenix, a decade-long SETI scrutiny of about 750 nearby star systems, using telescopes in Australia, West Virginia and Puerto Rico.
