Geoffrey William Marcy (born September 29, 1954) is an American astronomer. He was an early influence in the field of exoplanet detection, discovery, and characterization. Marcy was a professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, and an adjunct professor of physics and astronomy at San Francisco State University.
Geoff Marcy is known internationally for leading the discovery of 70 of the first 100 planets ever found around other stars. He and his collaborator, Paul Butler, discovered the first system of planets ever found around any Sun-like star, namely Upsilon Andromedae, just as our Sun has 8 planets.
