Herbert Kretzmer OBE (5 October 1925 – 14 October 2020) was a South African-born English [citation needed] journalist and lyricist. He was best known as the lyricist for the English-language musical adaptation of Les Misérables and for his collaboration with French singer and songwriter Charles Aznavour.

Herbert Kretzmer is probably best known for his greatly expanded English language version of the Boubil-Schonberg musical Les Miserables. Kretzmer’s now iconic lyrics formed the official version of the show, and as such, have been translated into over 22 languages for performances around the world during the last 28 years and counting.
