(ロードス島戦記 英雄騎士伝, rōdosu-tō senki: eiyū kishiden) is an anime television series primarily based on the two-volume novel series Record of Lodoss War: The Holy Knight of Lodoss, as well as some parts of the novel Record of Lodoss War: The Kings’ Holy War. It was first aired in Japan on 1 April 1998, and the series' final episode was aired on 30 September in that same year. It can be seen as a sequel to episode 8 of the OVA Record of Lodoss War from 1990 with episodes 9 to 13 of the OVA overlapping in some ways. Mostly with episodes 1-8 of the 1998 series, as both adapt from The Demon Dragon of Fire Dragon Mountain volumes 1 & 2 during both segments.
At the end of each episode before the ending theme plays, a two and a half-minute short cartoon with chibi-style characters, "Welcome to Lodoss Island!" (ようこそロードス島へ! Yōkoso rōdosu tō e) plays. The artstyle of this cartoon is based off the manga of the same name.
At the end of the series, Ashram and his people leave to find new land. The movie Legend of Crystania: The Motion Picture can be considered a sequel to Ashram's story.
Four months before the release of the anime, a manga adaptation was published by Kadokawa Shoten. Also in 1998, a drama CD was released.
The first eight episodes of Chronicles of the Heroic Knight are based on the third and fourth novels about the conflict at Fire Dragon Mountain, which takes place five years after Ghim's death. Parn's new allies Orson and Shiris lead a party to Fire Dragon Mountain to hunt down the fire dragon Shooting Star who has been terrorizing the countries of Raiden and Flaim, while Ashram searches for the Scepter of Domination.
Episodes 9 through 27 follow the adventures of the knight-in-training Spark who hails from the desert kingdom of Flaim, and his journey to recover the Soul Crystal Ball and Staff of Life and protect Little Neese from being kidnapped, all three of which comprise the two keys and Doorway which the dark wizard Wagnard desires in order to resurrect Kardis, the goddess of destruction.
The soundtrack was released on three CD's by JVCKENWOOD Victor Entertainment from 24 June to 21 October 1998. The Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight TV series is a more faithful adaptation of volumes three to four and six to seven, with the manga drawn by Masato Natsumoto also adapting from volumes six and seven.

Five years after the death of the Emperor of Marmo in the War of Heroes, Parn is now the Free Knight of Lodoss, he and his old allies now famous through the land. However, the Emperor's right-hand-man, Ashram, seeks the Scepter of Domination to re-unify Lodoss under his former leader's banner.
As the island of Lodoss braces against a new assault by the Marmo and their new allies, the fate of the land falls into the hands of Spark, an inexperienced young knight. As aging legends Ashram, Kashew, Parn and Deedlit begin to fade, a new generation of heroes will have to arise to keep Lodoss from being torn apart by conflict.
