Oct 2, 2019 · From live-action films and TV shows to animated series and video games, the Riddler shows up almost every time the Batman does, so it's only fitting we take a look at a few of his best and worst appearances outside of the comics.

- Frank Gorshin. The Riddler was launched into the big leagues of Batman’s rogues gallery thanks to the 1960s Batman TV series in which the Prince of Puzzles was portrayed by Frank Gorshin across 10 episodes of the show.
- John Astin. Gorshin’s popularity meant that John Astin had a hard time stepping into his shoes after the actor proved unavailable for a two-part storyline in Batman‘s second season.
- John Glover. Outside of the Riddler’s appearances on the Super Friends cartoons of the 1980s (in which he was voiced by Michael Bell), the next most notable screen incarnation of the foe hails from Batman: The Animated Series.
- Jim Carrey. The Riddler returned to live-action with 1995’s Batman Forever, in which Jim Carrey famously portrayed Nygma, teaming up with Tommy Lee Jones’ Two-Face to terrorize Val Kilmer’s Caped Crusader.
The Riddler ( Edward Nigma, later Edward Nygma or Edward Nashton) is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, and debuted in Detective Comics #140 in October 1948.

- The Brave and The Bold (2008) The Brave and The Bold offers a classic interpretation of the character, a clever trickster who is prone to overly complex plans and executing them with childish glee.
- Assault on Arkham (2014) Assault on Arkham is among the best of the Suicide Squad's on-screen appearances. The Riddler is their current target in this movie.
- The Batman (2004) If Brave and the Bold's Riddler was as classic as it gets, this goes in a completely different direction, design-wise. This Riddler, played by Robert Englund AKA Freddy Kruger, looks like the Batman Forever version of Marilyn Manson.
- Harley Quinn (2019) Gotham's "funniest villain," much to Joker's frustration, this version of the Riddler is indeed a hilarious version of the character.

More than that, it’s Bill Finger and Dick Sprang’s Riddler, created in 1948 as one of many colorful opponents for Batman to face. So, why does Riddler so often feel like a children’s story character? Well, because he is one. And that’s okay!
