Horace was fifteen (and surely in Rome) when Caesar’s army crossed the Rubicon, the river that separated his province from Italy, thus breaking the law and beginning a civil war (49 BCE). While Horace studied, Caesar battled Pompey and his supporters throughout the Mediterranean, returning victorious to Rome in 46 BCE.
