He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia , a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840).

Roberts was the first professional artist to visit the Near East without a patron or a connection to a military expedition or missionary group. He sailed to Alexandria in 1838 and for eleven months traveled up the Nile River, across deserts and mountains, through Egypt and the Holy Land, to arrive in Jerusalem on Easter 1839.
David Roberts, the renowned 19th-century Scottish artist, left an indelible mark on the art world through his extensive travels and meticulous renderings of landscapes, architecture, and historical scenes.
Roberts' international renown as a landscape painter developed from the lithographs published after his watercolours, inspired by his travels in Europe and the Middle East. He appears in eastern dress in Robert Scott Lauder's splendid portrait of him in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
