    36.4 ha. Ávila ( UK: / ˈævɪlə / AV-il-ə, [2] US: / ˈɑːv -/ AHV-, [3] Spanish: [ˈaβila] ⓘ) is a city of Spain located in the autonomous community of Castile and León. It is the capital and most populated municipality of the Province of Ávila . It lies on the right bank of the Adaja river.

    • The Walls. Ávila’s UNESCO-listed walls are considered among the finest city defences in the world. They have a perimeter of 2.5 kilometres and are never less than three metres-thick.
    • Los Cuatro Postes. This is a pilgrimage site west of the city although nobody can really agree on its origins. One story has it that it was chosen after the plague had passed through the city in the 12th-century.
    • Basilica de San Vicente. This is one of the greatest achievements in romanesque architecture in Spain. Like many of the medieval buildings the basilica’s granite walls have an eye-catching texture, a kind of mosaic of lighter and darker stones.

    • Murallas (Town Walls) The ancient walls, which still enclose the Ciudad Vieja (Old Town) of Ávila, are the best preserved in Spain. After the Christian Reconquest of Ávila, the ramparts became an important line of defense against the Moors.
    • Basilica de San Vicente. Outside the town walls beyond the Puerta de San Vicente, the Basilica of San Vicente stands on the spot where Saint Vincent is believed to have been martyred in AD 300.
    • Convento de Santa Teresa de Jesús. Opposite the Puerta de La Santa, the Convento de Santa Teresa de Jesús stands on the site of Santa Teresa's birthplace.
    • Real Monasterio de Santo Tomás. The Dominican monastery of Santo Tomás lies outside the town walls in a peaceful setting. With an endowment from the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, the Royal Monastery of Saint Thomas was founded in 1483 by María Dávila and Tomás de Torquemada, the first Grand Inquisitor of Spain.
