More than the software you pick, try and find a process for practice. Such as limiting your colors to a small (4-8 color) palette.

Thanks. You must have dug deep since I haven't posted any images on reddit for a while :) But yeah. I've found pixel art drawing to be more mechanical or formulaic and therefore benefitting more from knowledge of what works and what doesn't than actual skill, while traditional art requires more hand/eye coordination that comes from practice and repetition.
