  1. Aug 1, 2016 · You can tax the car, and then cancel (reclaim unused months of) the tax once you sell. You'd lose out on one month's tax - i.e. it would cost you a month of tax, even if you sold a week into the month.

  2. Nov 13, 2010 · I don't think you do now! My renewal states that there is a new law that as long as the tax disc has been purchased online or by phone in the last few days of the previous month, you will not be committing an offence by not displaying a tax disc during the first 5 days of the following month to allow for the disc to arrive in the post (as long as you applied before current disc or Sorn expired).

  3. Aug 1, 2011 · They just issue fixed penalties from their records (£80 + pay for the tax disc from expiry of the old one) - you don't need to tell them (maybe your 2 months untaxed won't get picked up) 0 scheming_gypsy Posts: 18,410 Forumite

  4. Aug 1, 2023 · Not had a road tax reminder for years - pay by Direct Debit is so much easier and no chance of forgetting. The DD is cancelled as soon as you notify sale of car, so no downside that I can see. Pay monthly or annually. I think if you register with honestjohn.co.uk you can get email reminders for road tax.

  5. Jan 4, 2016 · The quote from the DVLA says the code isn't valid until the 5th of the month my current tax expires in. As my tax expires at the start of Jan, the code isn't valid til 5 days later. Force ten: The problem is in my situation the tax runs out on the beginning of January, and the V11 code won't be valid until the 5th of January.

  6. Feb 10, 2023 · Got my renewal letter but can't renew tax as the system says it can't find a current MOT. I assume by this it means that the system won't renew with something that's going to expire shortly. In an ideal world I would have got the MOT done sooner but the OH was in hospital and I didn't relish sitting at a Halfords or wherever for 2 - 3 hours twiddling my thumbs.

  7. Dec 21, 2005 · What happens if a Road Tax disk expired at the end of a particular month and upon expiry the car was positioned offroad in a private driveway until a new tax disk was purchased one month later (but the owner forgot to send in a SORN certificate for the intervening month)?

  8. Jun 23, 2009 · Sorry if this sounds stupid question but I am really worried about it. My car's road tax expires on 31/7/09. I am away on holiday for the last three weeks of july and I will be back 2 days after the tax expiry. From previous experience, I can not pay the tax on line until after the 15th of the month (I am away then).

  9. Jan 26, 2006 · There's a penalty of £80 for failure to renew a tax disc and a fine of £1,000 for driving a car without a tax disc. You are unlikely to get the £80 penalty if the new disc starts on the day after the old one expired, but you can still get caught (e.g. by the Police) for having an untaxed car on the highway.

  10. Sep 23, 2008 · You can buy a tax disc to start on October 1st from today. HOWEVER you cannot drive it on the road as the tax disc isn't valid until October 1st and if you were caught driving it before then, you would have the car seized and be liable for a fine. The only way you could drive it now would be to tax it from 1st September thus losing 3 weeks.
