The entire cast is pretty great, but it’s really our leads Wu Lei and Zhao Lu Si who ground this one for me, with their nuanced portrayals of their characters, and their fantastic shared chemistry.

Shao Shang is a defiant and stubborn young lady who feels abandoned by her family. She is witty with a strong will. She is also free-spirited and hates being restrained. Shao Shang doesn’t like studying but excels in building things and engineering. She will stand up for herself when bullied and believes in an eye for an eye. Shao Shang has a poor relationship with her mother whom she sees as being overly strict and prejudiced against her.
Ling Bu Yi / Zi Sheng
Ling Bu Yi is a victorious general and was brought up by Emperor Wen who regards him like a son. He is a cold and fierce-looking man who is both feared and admired. He can be ruthless against his enemies. Ling Bu Yi has a strained relationship with his father, Ling Yi, and stepmother, Madam Chun Yu. His mother is Huo Jun Hua who is the last surviving member of the Huo family while his maternal uncle was General Huo Chong who died defending Gu City.
Cheng Shi / General Cheng & Xiao Yuan Yi
General Cheng is Shao Shang’s father who has just been promoted to a marquis after years of battle away from home. He is an amiable man who dotes on his daughter but is often caught in between her and his strict wife, Yuan Yi, who is also a military officer. Yuan Yi is a very dominant woman who is a strict disciplinarian. Hence, she doesn’t know how to get along with Shao Shang who is equally strong-willed.
Cheng Song and Cheng Shao Gong
Cheng Song is Shao Shang’s 2nd elder brother while Shao Gong is her twin brother. They are loving brothers to Shao Shang and protective of her.
Cheng Cheng & Madam Ge
Cheng Cheng is General Cheng’s younger brother and Shao Shang’s 2nd uncle. He is an unaccomplished scholar and also a cripple. He is a weak man who is despised by his wife, Madam Ge. Madam Ge is a jealous and petty woman who often bullies Shao Shang.
