Annan (/ ˈ æ n ən / AN-ən; Scottish Gaelic: Inbhir Anainn) is a town and former royal burgh in Dumfries and Galloway, south-west Scotland. Historically part of Dumfriesshire, its public buildings include Annan Academy, of which the writer Thomas Carlyle was a pupil, and a Georgian building now known as "Bridge House".
Annan is a town on the north shore of the Solway Firth and is just eight miles from the English border. Annan lies on the east side of the River Annan and began as a river port in the 14th century. Most of modern Annan was built within the past two centuries.

Annan lies on the east side of the River Annan a mile or so north of where it flows into the Solway Firth. With a name probably derived from the Gaelic goddess of prosperity, Anu, it initially grew around a river port and a royal castle built by Robert the Bruce by the early 1300s.
