Brick Lane (Bengali: ব্রিক লেন, romanized:Brik Len) is a famous street in the East End of London, in the borough of Tower Hamlets. It runs from Swanfield Street in Bethnal Green in the north, crosses the Bethnal Green Road before reaching the busiest, most commercially active part which runs through Spitalfields, or along its eastern edge.
Though the shops and restaurants on Brick Lane are open daily, the best day to visit Brick Lane is on Sundays, when the Brick Lane Market comes to life. The market is situated in the London East End, once known for its slums and Jack the Ripper infamy.

It’s hard to believe that in the 16th century, Brick Lane was but a humble country path bordered by brick-firing workshops. It’s really built up over the years. Historically, this Spitalfields street was in one of the most deprived areas on the outskirts of London, with huge families crammed into tiny terraced houses.
Brick Lane was built on top of a Roman burial ground, and before the 15th century, it was known under the name Whitechapel Lane as it led to St Mary’s Whitechapel (the church that gave the area its name).. The church was seriously damaged by bombing in the Blitz in 1941 and was demolished in 1952. Its remains are still visible today in Altab Ali Park.
