Sep 22, 2011 · Of course in Manhunter the changes he made were much more drastic, and surely the lesson to learn is just to leave well alone. I have no problem with Director's asking for alternative versions to be released on the same disc (as is the case here), but think it's very important to include the Theatrical Cut, irrespective of the latter changes.

Whilst I regard Manhunter to be an absolute masterpiece – its average Box Office results at the time growing to give it a now-huge cult classic status and a sizeable fan following to boot – it is certainly not the flawless gem which Director Michael Mann almost managed ...
Aug 25, 2023 · William Petersen headlines the cast like a born star, and, between this and his subsequent starring turn in Manhunter (one of the most underrated Michael Mann films, and a strong contender for the best Hannibal Lecter adaptation that, to this day, nobody really acknowledges), it's hard to see how he ended up treading water for most of his career, and is likely now best known as Gil Grissom on CSI.

Nov 2, 2021 · Retitled Manhunter, the film was an utter flop, so when Harris wrote another book in the series - The Silence of the Lambs - the second Lecter film adaptation, from director Jonathan Demme, was much more cautious and almost documentary-like in its style, in comparison to the moody, 80s-drenched Mann predecessor.

Although bearing the label 'Director's Definitive Edition', this is the same 'definitive' cut Mann first graced us with for Heat's original release - indeed the theatrical cut has never had an HD release.
