   Word Origin late Middle English: via late Latin from New Testament Greek mamōnas (see Matt. 6:24, Luke 16:9–13), from Aramaic māmōn ‘riches’. The word was taken by medieval writers as the name of the devil of covetousness, and revived in this sense by Milton.
