A Brief History of GESS. In 1885, a school was founded in some shophouses in Tanjong Pagar by Mr Gan Eng Seng to offer free education to the children of poor parents in the vicinity. It was called the Anglo-Chinese Free School.

The Gan Eng Seng School's Founding Site ( Chinese: 颜永成学校创校地点 ), marked by twin commemorative plaques at present, is located at the junction of Telok Ayer Street and Cecil Street in the southern part of Singapore, near the Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church.
