Rapides Parish, one of the districts of Louisiana while it was held by the French, received its name from the rapids in the Red River. It was one of the 12 counties created in 1804, and became one of the 19 parishes of the territory when the counties were abolished by the territorial legislature in 1807, during the administration of Gov. Claiborne.
