The second season of Legendary premiered in the United States on May 6, 2021, on HBO Max. Ten ballroom houses were selected to compete in the running of becoming "Legendary".
In July 2020, HBO Max renewed the series for this season, which had its premiere date announced on April 17, 2021.
On April 16, 2021, 10 Houses were revealed on the instagram page of the show as the competitors of the season. Season 2 is the first season to hold 10 Houses in the competition, as the previous season only had 8 Houses competing to become "Legendary".
During this season's promo (and before the premiere), it was announced that Legendary was nominated by the MTV Movie & TV: Unscripted Awards for "Best Competition Series" and "Best Fight" (Law Roach vs. Dominique Jackson) and by the Webby Awards for the "Diversity & Inclusion" and "Social Content Series for TV & Film" categories.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic restrictions, the premiere of the season had to be divided in two episodes. As there were 10 houses, they were divided in 2 groups in order for them to showcase the Grand March category. These restrictions also challenged the houses to face elimination for the first time in the premieres of Legendary, as the first season did not have eliminations in its premiere episode.
