The film is not a sequel to 1989's The Punisher, it is a reboot. The story and plot were mainly based on two Punisher comic book stories; Punisher: Year One and "Welcome Back, Frank" along with scenes from other Punisher stories such as Marvel Preview #2, Punisher: War Zone and Punisher War Journal.
