- Throwback bling. It was the era of the bejewel, when everything from belly-skimming bustier tops to bootcut jeans glinted with crystals. For SS22, they’ve been used more sparingly as a refined accent rather than a full-on sparkly statement.
- Tube tops. Carrie Bradshaw, Britney Spears and Naomi Campbell all sported the kind of tube tops that rose in popularity in the late ’90s and endured throughout the early 2000s.
- The shoulder bag. The ‘It’ bag as a concept came about in Y2K, and no silhouette was more delectable than a baguette bag. Cute and cool, this tiny piece of arm candy was often carried by Paris Hilton, who was rarely papped without both a tiny bag and a tiny dog.
- The PVC shoe. A firm fixture on the aughts dance floor, the PVC sandal is a party shoe like no other. Simultaneously understated and yet undeniably sexy, these stilettos are this summer’s wear-with-anything silhouette – whether after-dark minis or jeans and tailored blazers – and colorful iterations are an easy way to brighten up more muted looks.
- Wide-Leg Denim Jeans. When it comes to denim, the early 2000s may perhaps be best known for bootcut and low-rise jeans. Or, the ever-polarizing Canadian tuxedo, as made immortal by Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in 2001.
- Ribbed Cardigans. Bedazzled logo t-shirts may have reigned supreme when it comes to casual ’00s looks, but the elevated top option came in the form of soft, ribbed button-ups and cardigans.
- Miniskirts. Following a big moment in the ’90s (thank you, Alicia Silverstone), miniskirts returned in the 2000s as the perfect form-fitting counterpart to cropped tees.
- Velour Track Sets. It’s impossible to think of Y2K fashion without your imagination immediately conjuring images of velour Juicy Couture track sets, as worn proudly by the undeniable screen queens of the early aughts – Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.

- Crochet. Style Notes: A surprising trend, crochet spans decades and still looks good with whatever you wear with it. This is the classic Y2K pairing of jeans and a nice top, with the statement bag adding a little extra.
- Lace-Up Pieces. Style Notes: Strings are back this season, including the G-string (but not as you know it). Here, Lucy Liu is wearing what looks like a lace-up jumpsuit.
- Nice Tops. Style Notes: There are few celebrities who avoided this look during Y2K. The nice-jeans-and-a-top outfit was a go-to for even red carpet events, as proven here by Liv Tyler.
- Body Chains. Style Notes: Jennifer Lopez was known for plenty of outfits during this time, and while most people were fairly restrained on red carpets, she wore that green Versace dress.
