Chełmno ( [ˈxɛu̯mnɔ] ⓘ; older English: Culm; German: Kulm ⓘ, formerly also Culm) is a town in northern Poland near the Vistula river with 18,915 inhabitants as of December 2021. [1] . It is the seat of the Chełmno County in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship .
Chełmno [a] or Kulmhof was the first of Nazi Germany 's extermination camps and was situated 50 km (31 mi) north of Łódź, near the village of Chełmno nad Nerem. Following the invasion of Poland in 1939, Germany annexed the area into the new territory of Reichsgau Wartheland.
