Mar 12, 2014 · People will understand what you mean either way (given the context) but I'd say "anniversary" would be the proper term to use here. The term "birthday" usually refers strictly to people's birthday (and honestly, I've never heard it being used to describe anything else!)

Although one's birthday is technically an anniversary of the day one was born, we don't refer to it as an "anniversary" in English. I remember attending my grandparents' Golden Jubilee (their 50th wedding anniversary celebration).

I don't think "five-year anniversary" is strange for marking five years since a historic event, especially a tragic one. The phrase "fifth anniversary" is associated with wedding anniversaries. (You should not use any other phrase in that context.) It gives rise to happy thoughts.

(annus) Those who say such things as "six-month anniversary" are simply misusing the word.
