  1. Finally spent the money on Torchbearer 2E (Scholar's, Dungeoneer's, and Loremaster's) having been a big fan of burning wheel for over ten years (though alas, mostly in a theoretical sense as it is a hard game to find players for). I am in love with Torchbearer. It has really seized my imagination and gotten the creative neurons firing.

  2. May 11, 2023 · Torchbearer is a really good tactical (not grid combat) strategic dungeon crawl game. If you like darkest dungeon, you'll like torchbearer. You're characters will be impoverished and (at least if you've got the tone right) get beat up by your dungeons, so it is important to have something important drive them forward.

  3. Dec 11, 2021 · Torchbearer, unlike many other fantasy TRPGs, does not utilize any sort of grid-based combat. All the Conflict opponents act in kind-of abstract "theatre-of-the-mind" scene where the marching order does not matter as much, as everyone can target everyone. Which, by extension, removes any positioning tools from the hands of the players — mages ...

  4. Jan 24, 2022 · Jan 24, 2022. #1. I backed the Torchbearer 2nd edition Kickstarter in April 2020. My books arrived a couple of weeks ago: the two core book (Dungeoneer's Handbook, Scholar's Guide), the expansion book (Lore Master's Manual) and a book of scenarios (Cartographer's Compendium). I also got PDF of all these plus the Scavenger's Supplement, another ...

  5. Apr 13, 2015 · Most of these come with mechanical penalties. Unlike the 1hp fighter who's basically fine, a Torchbearer character with a lot of conditions feels like a half-crushed insect crawling for cover. A badly roughed up party is a sorry thing indeed. One tool the characters have to help with time is their Instincts.

  7. Apr 15, 2016 · Torchbearer is "abstract" because it only wants players to roll when something meaningful is on the line. Remember, the results of a failed roll are always a Condition or a Twist. Torchbearer puts mechanical emphasis on the key moments in a dungeon crawl, and lets the group spend as little or as much time on the smaller details as the GM likes.

  8. Sep 18, 2014 · Torchbearer and mouse guard run similarly. The major differences being that you're mice in mouse guard... Which makes for some very interesting adventures and obstacles. Torchbearer is unique in the amount of detail that goes into each individual map. It's also unique in the fact that the system essentially has a clock built into it.

  9. i love torchbearer and am currently playing a 12+ session long torchbearer campaign. But it has a very rigid structure, only does gritty dungeon crawling and adjacent taxing adventures and focusses on the group more than on the individual character. the boardgamey feeling goes away when you have internalized the mechanics but torchbearer is still very different from the average rpg. mostly ...

  10. Jan 31, 2023 · Both editions of the game are completely fine. And 2e offers much more content. Thing is, that content, for me, goes against the very thing that makes the game appealing to me. At the heart of Torchbearer, there's this idea that the dungeon is a dangerous, actively hostile environment, something that exhausts you and pushes you out.
