Besides soldiers, we have sailors, Marines, airmen and Coast Guardsmen in the armed services. Moreover, we have servicemen and women and as such, "servicemen" is definitely NOT politically correct (if that's what you mean by "P.C.)
Nov 12, 2009 · "Soldier," in the U.S. applies to members of the U.S. Army and not the Navy, Air Force or Marines, although you will see it misused in this respect. The only use I see in the military, at least that of the U.S.A., is being forbidden to fly and this would be the case if you are talking about U.S. Army aviation units (mostly helicopters), but not as general discipline.
I came across some confusing expressions: 1. It's been 3 years since I was a soldier. 2. It's been 3 years since I was here. I thought maybe #1 could translate into "I have joined in Army/ been a soldier for 3 years". But I am not sure. And for #2, I have absolutely no idea during the 3 years where "I" was. Thank you!
