Generally, the 318 was a workhorse engine, using a single two-barrel carburetor for most of its life; it took regular gas, and provided good power, reliability, and, for a V8 of its time, economy.
Nov 16, 2020 · The first performance enhancement you do on a stock 318 is to install the (factory) 340/360 H.P. cam (or equivalent). With stock heads, 2Bbl carb and even 2.76 gears this is already a 'fun-package'. Even with 4.11 gears (and street tires), the FIRST 5 feet that the car travels is the most critical.
Oct 11, 2021 · 318 tbi upgrades. Hey everyone, i have a 1991 Dodge D150 with the 318 TBI. I was curious to know what upgrades can be done to the truck to increase horsepower and torque. So far the only thing ive done is added an MSD coil and wires to the truck when i tuned it up. Im planning on adding headers and a dual exhaust to open up the breathing a bit.
Oct 19, 2013 · The 318 is rated 2MPG less overall than the 3.9. The 318 and the 3.9 are the same engine, other than the number of cylinders - same distributor design, same timing chain. I'm not sure which transmission you'll find behind the 318. At first there was the A500 (904 based) and A518 (727 based).

May 16, 2018 · dana44. 6195 posts · Joined 2002. #3 · May 16, 2018. Randy is right. The 318 has smaller main bearing journals (and a larger rear main seal), so it doesn't work out so easily. You would also be dropping the compression because the 360 has a longer stroke so the rods would be moving a shorter distance, thus the compression would drop dramatically.
