Heretic has 440 hp at level 1 with 6 hp degen. That means it takes you ~73 seconds to die from health degen. Each time you use shift, which has a 6 second cooldown, you get 80 health, or another 11-12 seconds of life. That means as long as you use shift more often than that 12 seconds, you won't die to just health degen.
