An historic samurai town that's home to Japan's oldest Zen temple and 10,000 cranes. Each year over 10,000 cranes migrate to the Izumi area from Siberia in a spectacular event not seen elsewhere in the country. Once home to tough samurai, Izumi is the former northern stronghold of the Satsuma domain.
Izumi (出水市, Izumi-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 July 2024, the city had an estimated population of 51,450 in 25838 households, and a population density of 160 persons per km 2. [1] The total area of the city is 329.98 km 2 (127.41 sq mi).
The Izumi Crane Observation Center is the best place to witness the amazing natural spectacle of over 10,000 cranes migrating to Izumi from Siberia for the winter months. The center is open between October and March each year.

Izumi is located in the southwestern part of Osaka Prefecture, about 25 km from the city center of Osaka and about 20 km from Kansai International Airport, forming a long and narrow city area (6.9 km east–west, 18.8 km north–south) from north to south.
Every year more than 10,000 cranes from Siberia and China winter in Izumi, Japan's largest migratory ground. The number and variety of migrating birds is said to be the highest in Japan, resulting in the designation of Izumi as a special natural monument.
Izumi City is in the north-west corner of the prefecture, facing the East China Sea. During the winter months (late-October to March), birdwatchers from around the world descend upon the city to observe the more than 10,000 cranes that migrate from Siberia to the warmer climate of southern Japan.
