Dr. Robert Weil, the founder of the estate, purchased his first vineyards on the Kiedrich hillsides in 1867. At the time he was still engaged as a Professor of German at the Sorbonne University in Paris, but was later forced to leave France in the run-up to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71.

Wilhelm Weil created one of the first brand names for German wine. He took his great-grandfather's estate and created not just a flagship for German winegrowing, but a new image for Riesling as a whole.
Wilhelm Weil learned the intricacies of winemaking from the ground up. That education has shaped the many decisions that now define the fortunes of the estate. His efforts began in 1987 with far-sighted investments in the cellar and vineyards and the introduction of the "Tiffany Blue" label.
