In the past, Tai Po District belonged to the Regional Council, the middle-tier local government between the city's Legislative Council and the district councils. The Regional Council oversees the New Territories, while its counterpart, Urban Council, oversees Kowloon (including New Kowloon) and the Hong Kong Island.
At present, due to the development of the new town, the place name Tai Po may refer to Tai Po New Town or the historical area centre Tai Po Market, or the Tai Po District (excluding exclave Sai Kung North) that covers the new town and Lam Tsuen Valley and another area.
Surrounded by lush and fertile valleys, Tai Po eventually became an important market town, and when the British leased the New Territories from Mainland China in 1898, this was where they established their first headquarters. These days, Tai Po is one of Hong Kong’s most agreeable districts.
