Tampines (/ ˈtæmpəniːs / TAM-pə-nees) is the regional centre of the East Region of Singapore. With a population of 284,560 living across its five subzones as of 2024, it is the most populous planning area in Singapore. [4] It is home to approximately 5% of Singapore's population.

Tampines was named after the ‘Tempinis’ tree which grew abundantly in the area. In its early days, farmers and villagers in scattered squatter settlements dotted its otherwise barren landscape.
Tampines Town Past & Present. In the past, Tampines was covered by forests, swamp and sand quarries. The name Tampines came from the Malay word for a ironwood tree found abundantly in the town, 'Tempinis'.
