Clonakilty, often shortened to "Clon", is a town on the coast of County Cork in southwest Ireland, 50 km southwest of Cork city. Rosscarbery is situated 7 km southwest of Woodfield.
Clonakilty (/ ˈ k l ɔː n æ ˌ k ɪ l t iː /; Irish: Cloich na Coillte, meaning 'stone (castle) of the woods'), [2] sometimes shortened to Clon, [3] [4] is a town in County Cork, Ireland. The town is at the head of the tidal Clonakilty Bay.
Collins was born in Woodfield, County Cork, the youngest of eight children. He moved to London in 1906 to become a clerk in the Post Office Savings Bank at Blythe House. He was a member of the London GAA, through which he became associated with the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Gaelic League.
Woodfield House is located in Knockanoran, a peaceful rural area near Clonakilty, County Cork. The farm consists of two small dry-stone houses: one is still intact, while the other – the oldest – perished in a fire started by the English in 1921 (in retaliation for Collins’ actions).
